In what is now a protected area, in the 1960s-70s there was an agricultural estate, Hacienda La Carrera, which included a sort of small zoo with, among other things, spider monkeys. At the time of the agrarian reform, during the Revolution, many of the animals were sold or killed. The monkeys survived. They constitute one of only two colonies of monkeys living in the wild in El Salvador. The colony numbers 30 monkeys, and although they live in the wild, they are very curious and you can observe them.
