135 km² artificial lake formed when the Cerrón Grande hydroelectric dam was built on the Río Lempa.
A good half-hour's walk is all it takes to reach the Suchitlán artificial lake (135 km²), formed in 1973 when the Cerrón Grande hydroelectric dam was built on the Río Lempa. From November to March, the birds gather here and the spectacle is spectacular. You can eat on its banks, or rent boats and cruise the lake, or even take a ferry to the other side (where buses can connect you to the northern towns, an original idea for the adventurous). Buses also run between the village and the lake.
