Tegucigalpa's patron saint's day celebrates the city's foundation by a group of Spanish miners almost 450 years ago. The celebrations begin with a mass in the cathedral, followed by a solemn procession of Saint Michael the Archangel through the city center. Carnival, float parades, processions (especially the San Miguel procession from the market of the same name), fireworks and sports tournaments are all on the program.
