The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel is located in the heart of the city, on the banks of the Parque Central, and was built between 1765 and 1782. Baroque in architecture, it is one of the best-preserved historic buildings in Honduras. It survived a fire in 1746, an earthquake in 1823 and the civil wars of 1919 and 1924, and has been renovated several times. The cathedral features a beautiful high altar by Guatemalan artist Vicente Gálvez. The sculpture of St. Michael is also worth seeing.
