Construction began in 1575 to protect the site from pirates, but as with Omoa, it was not soon completed. In fact, the Trujillo site was not secured until the early 19th century, shortly before Independence and after the arrival of the Garifunas. In 1910, a Honduran general tried to seize the fort with a view to staging a coup, but failed. Restoration work has now been completed. Very small museum inside, nice little walk overall.
