CATEDRAL SANTA MARÍA

It was inaugurated on December 8, 1711, after more than 120 years of construction! It is the largest of all the cathedrals built in Honduras. 4 of the 16 original altarpieces have been preserved, sculpted by A. and F. de Ocampo in the 1630's. The high altar is sumptuous; another displays a Black Christ. The clock, made in 1100 and placed at the Alhambra in Granada (Spain), was donated to Comayagua by King Felipe III in 1636. In 1711, it finally found its permanent home here. Look: the Roman numeral IV is written IIII, as was customary in the past.
