Built between 1550 and 1551 by Francisco Suárez, it is the oldest brick and stone monument in Honduras (some say Central America). It suffered greatly from the earthquake of 1774, and one of its two towers, housing the clock donated by Felipe III, was partially destroyed. Inside, beautiful gilded altarpieces. Completely restored, the square in front of the cathedral now boasts a certain colonial charm, in the midst of a modernist architectural district. A small market is sometimes held here.
