Founded in 1560 by the Antonines, the church became Franciscan in 1575. The roof is not authentic, a wooden structure having replaced the original dome after the earthquake of 1774. One of the niches houses a cross that is said to have been exorcised in 1603 (tradition has it that a cloud-shaped ghost would emerge from the Río Chiquito every Friday and envelop the cross, which was then erected in the central square at high noon!)
