In the central plaza, León Alvarado, you'll find this large yellow arch-shaped gate, one of the symbols of Comayagua. At the top, you can see the bell that alerted the population and brought citizens together on September 28, 1821, to learn of Honduran independence (which had taken place a few days earlier, on September 15). The bell is believed to have been made in Spain in 1460, before being brought to Honduras. It is listed in the National Heritage Register. Commemorations of the event are held under the arch.
