D&D BREWERY, LODGE, RESTAURANT & ADVENTURES
Go there and contact
D&D is the most popular lodge on the lake. The place is a veritable mine of information and offers a myriad of activities through its D&D Adventures agency. Walther, the on-site activities coordinator, is always on hand to share his invaluable advice. Born and raised in Peña Blanca, Walther speaks fluent English and is an avid nature lover, especially of birds. If you're not staying long, a good introduction to the area is a kayak or rowboat tour of the lake, or a three-hour hike past numerous lookouts. For bird lovers, the two national parks, the Luna del Puente and El Pinal Santa Barbara nature reserves and the lake's marshy surroundings are not to be missed. Notable birds include the kill-billed motmot, emerald honduras, resplendent quetzal, northern potoo and esmeralda hummingbird. For the more athletic, it's possible to climb the second highest mountain in Honduras, Santa Barbara: a 7-hour hike through cloud forests, quite an experience! Looking for a more leisurely activity? The route des cascades is for you... Is it raining? Head for the Taulabé caves. There's always something to do nearby! Transport and transfers are available, notably between the town of Tela, on the Pacific coast, and the lodge.
