Warsaw, the capital of Poland, is a city of great political and cultural importance. With a population of over 1.75 million, it is one of the most important transportation, economic and commercial centers in Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw is home to numerous institutions, universities, theaters, museums and monuments. Situated on either side of the Vistula River, in the Mazovian Voivodeship, Warsaw is the center of Poland's second-largest conurbation, with around 3.5 million inhabitants. The city is divided into 18 districts, including Śródmieście, which forms the city center and is home to the reconstructed Old Town of Warsaw, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Warsaw has a rich history, having been the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Nobility Republic in the 17th and 18th centuries, then of the Second Polish Republic after the First World War. The city was almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War, but was rebuilt faithfully to the original. Today, Warsaw is a dynamic, modern city with varied architecture and a lively cultural scene.
