A true center of Warsaw's Jewish community, it is also the only one of Warsaw's three large synagogues to have survived the war, in the former ghetto that began here and extended northwards. It was erected among many others in the Grzybowski district, traditionally inhabited by Jews. Its history began in 1893, when a prominent merchant, Zalman Nozyk, bought the land on which to build the synagogue. The project, financed by the merchant, began in 1898 and was completed four years later.
