Built in 1860, it is used primarily for the carriage of goods (mainly wood) and then for tourism since 1912, with the arrival of railway transport. It connects Elbląg to Ostróda and is the longest canal in Poland (80 km). It has unique technical facilities in the world on the crossing of 99,60 m of the canal: instead of the usual locks, a system of five ramps makes it possible to lift the boats and shoot them on the ground, using train trucks.
