Sunk between 1824 and 1830, this 80 km-long canal was designed to give the Russian part of Poland access to the Baltic Sea. The coast was controlled by the Prussians, who imposed exorbitant tariffs. It is a remarkable monument to civil engineering. To the east, it crosses a series of lakes in the Augustów Forest, and leads straight to the border, offering a superb journey. Canoeists can enjoy over 30 km of canoeing between Augustów and the Belarusian border.
