Perhaps the most interesting visit in Tykocin is to the old synagogue. Built in 1642, in what was once a Jewish quarter, it is surprisingly well preserved. Today, it houses a rich museum demonstrating the importance of Jewish culture in the past, in this region where it was definitively driven out by the war (as in many other parts of the country). On display are religious objects such as the Torah and Hanukkah lamps. In the middle of the exhibition is the Bimah, where the scrolls were read.
