Gdansk is a city on Poland's northern coast, famous for its Old Town, which houses the city's main monuments such as St. John's Church, the Great Mill and the Great Arsenal, and is itself one of Poland's oldest cities. The Gdansk region is also famous for processing the vast quantities of amber, (a gem that changes color according to its age), found along the coast. As Poland's main seaport, the city has benefited from centuries of flourishing trade along the European sea routes. This is an international theater festival held every August to celebrate the work of the famous playwright William Shakespeare and his Elizabethan contemporaries. With three different universities in the city, this part of Poland excels in its academic aspirations. As a hub of student activity, there's plenty to interest a young audience, as well as numerous museums and educational galleries to satisfy your taste for culture. Don't miss the Museum of Modern Art housed in the Abbot's Palace to see magnificent paintings and sculptures from around the world.
