Identical to the Bread Gate (Brama Chlebnicka), which opens onto the street of the same name, St. Mary's Gate marks the entrance to Mariacka Street. Both gates were built at the same time, following the same architectural model. From the 15th century onwards, it played a defensive role (like most of the city's gates), helping to protect the city. In the 16th century, it ceased to be used for defensive purposes and was converted to residential use. From the Porte Sainte-Marie, continue on to the Basilica of Notre-Dame.
