NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM
Located on Lead Island (Wyspa Ołowianka), this excellent museum occupies the three granaries of Oliwa, Copper and Virgin.
The exhibition traces the history of Poland's relationship with the sea, from its origins to the present day, through paintings, documents, objects, engravings and models. Everything that has to do with the sea can be found here: reconstructions of ships from all over the world, the fauna and flora of all the oceans, Polish emigration and the great travellers, with a section dedicated to the young sailor Józef Korzeniowski, better known by his English name, Jospeh Conrad.
The museum also houses the Morska Gallery (Galeria Morska), an interesting gallery of marine paintings featuring Polish and foreign works from the 17th century to the interwar period. The tour continues in the Sołdek museum-ship (Statek-Muzeum Sołdek), the first Polish ship to come out of the city's shipyards in 1949. Moored on the quay, it bears the name of its captain, Stanisław Sołdek, and remains a symbol of national independence.
To get to Lead Island, you can take the Motława ferry past the Medieval Crane (open to visitors and closed for renovation in 2023 - see the website to prepare your visit), or walk across Granary Island via Stągiewna Street. You can then continue to the left, via Szafarnia street, on the other side of the Motława, and take the first bridge to lead island.
