The fortress of Świnoujście protected the town from the Middle Ages to modern times. Damaged during the Second World War, some buildings survived and were reused during the Communist era. Since 2005, a 4-kilometer trail has allowed visitors to tour the fortress. Three not-to-be-missed stops include Fort Angel, Fort West and Fort East, each offering a unique view of the history of the city and the fortress.
