Krakow is considered Poland's cultural and intellectual center. With a population of 800,653 within the city walls and 1,452,496 in the metropolitan area, Krakow is Poland's second-largest city after Warsaw. Krakow's origins date back to the 7th century, making it one of Poland's oldest and most important cities. Its historic center lies at the foot of Wawel Hill, home to the royal castle, cathedral and necropolis of the kings of Poland. Over the centuries, the city developed as the seat of the Polish monarchs, then flourished as the capital of the Republic of the Two Nations. Today, Krakow is famous for its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural heritage. In 2000, it was named European Capital of Culture. The city has also hosted international sporting events such as the Men's World Volleyball Championship in 2014 and the Men's European Handball Championship in 2016.
