Established around 1580, it is one of Poland's largest and oldest Jewish cemeteries, miraculously escaping Nazi barbarism. With some 3,000 graves, it bears witness to the historic importance of the Jewish community. It also evokes the finality of the Nazi extermination plan, when the number of graves still standing outnumbers the city's Jewish population. It's a deeply moving place of remembrance for locals and tourists alike. The old gateway is now part of the Holocaust Museum in Washington.
