CHÂTEAU DE CASIMIR
The present castle was erected in 1340 on a hill overlooking the town by the unforgettable Casimir the Great, who is a constant presence in the country's architecture. In reality, it was built on an earlier complex dating back to 1018, erected by the Polish king Bolesław I Chrobry (the Valiant), whose Romanesque stone rotunda and palatial complex can still be found in the residential section of today's castle. Renovated in the 16th century in Renaissance style, it was later largely destroyed and now houses a theater.
