SUR LA PISTE DES HIPPOS

Hippos are still present in Upper Guinea, particularly in a triangle encompassing the Upper Niger Park between Faranah, Kankan and Kérouané. They are still seen from time to time near Kankan, especially during the rainy season. In addition, several sites, where they have been regularly observed, are located between Kankan and Kérouané in the waters of the Milo. Going in search of the hippopotamus is a real adventure, because even if the fishermen of the surroundings know the region of the river in which they are found, it is necessary above all to track them, to spot their dung, their tracks and to listen to the sounds of the river to locate them. The rest of the "hunt" is usually somewhat variable depending on the location of the animals. It is not always easy, because hippos are able to hold their breath under water for about four minutes! Seeing them becomes a really strong and moving moment. If you want to try the adventure, you can for example go to the village of Komodou located beyond Bissandougou towards Kérouané. You will have to ask the village to be accompanied by a guide, to go in search of the mali (hippopotamuses in Malinké). It is then preferable to be well equipped for the walk and in particular to wear pants, because the approach to the edges of the river is generally rather difficult. In the end, even if you don't see the mali, you will dive into the heart of the Mandingo region for unique and memorable moments.
