A Tata is an entrenched camp built under the authority of a warlord to defend himself from enemy attacks, particularly those of colonial troops in the 19th century. Of Samory's Tata at Kérouané, there is in fact not much left except the hill on which the chief's residence was located and the vestibule (original or not, it is difficult to know) of the famous Tata as well as a section of old wall. A gilded bust of Samory on a pedestal has been installed more recently nearby.
