PARC NATIONAL DU HAUT NIGER
Created in 1997, the park was born around the classified forest of Mafou and Kouya; it covers an area of more than 110,000 ha north and east of Faranah. This site is of capital importance. First of all, it is home to animal and plant species necessary for the maintenance of West African biological diversity, and secondly, it is located in the migration corridor of large mammals between Guinea and other neighboring countries. An excellent place for tourism. Even if the organization and the infrastructures to receive visitors are still to be improved, there is still the possibility of being lodged on the spot and accompanied by the guides of the park, in search of antelopes, monkeys, hippopotamuses, crocodiles... The rates are negotiated on the spot. In the dry season, the animals gathered around the ponds are easier to see. However, generally speaking, to observe them, you need time and a little luck. This is the case for hippos, which are often in the same area of the park but remote.
Since 2019, Aboubacar Samoura has been appointed chief curator for the park and some additional resources have been allocated, which has allowed some progress in the internal organization of the park. In 2022, appointed Director General of the National Strategy for the Protection of the Environment, he was waiting for the appointment of his replacement, but you can still contact him at +224 628 35 52 16.
