ON THE TRAIL OF THE ELEPHANTS
The forest of Ziama is one of the last primary forests of the forest region. It's a wonder! Even if it is still subject to strong local pressures, the classified forest is still large and dense enough to shelter a rich fauna (including the forest elephant and the dwarf hippopotamus) and flora. Here the teams of forest rangers of Sérédou are hard at work to preserve the more than 100 000 ha of this massif on a daily basis. Obviously, the most emblematic representative of this fauna is the forest elephant. Smaller than its savannah cousin, it is nonetheless a majestic animal whose encounter is always impressive. The population of pachyderms being in constant decline in the region, one must be patient and courageous to hope to meet them. There is no guarantee in the species, especially since their territory, which extends towards Liberia, is very vast. Since 2019, two males (most certainly the father and the son) have been observed regularly, especially outside the forest. In 2022 they are being monitored by the teams of the forestry center. The goal is to protect them and to raise awareness among local populations for their preservation.
To go on the elephant trail, you will have to contact the forestry center of Sérédou to be accompanied by a guide, the best being to warn in advance by contacting Mr. Sacko, responsible for local ecotourism, at + 224 628 22 90 35.
