Below the Amura fortress lies the port of Pidjiguiti. In places, it looks more like a boat graveyard than a real trading post. This is the departure point for the Bijagos, either by ferry or private shuttle. It was also the scene of the massacre on August 3, 1959 by Portuguese forces of 50 dockworkers demonstrating for a pay rise. Forever etched in people's memories, August 3 has been a national holiday ever since.
