A lush island home to a top-notch industrial unit where peanuts (mancarra) were processed into peanut oil
Just off the port of Bissau lies Ilhéu do Rei, a lush island with a glorious past. In the second half of the 20th century, it was home to a top-quality industrial unit that processed peanuts (mancarra) into peanut oil. Rice was also husked and stored here, while hulls and other waste materials were recovered to produce energy for the island. Today, the unit is in ruins and nature has reclaimed its rights. You can visit the island by pirogue to meet the inhabitants. A camp is due to open in 2025.
