COURAGEOUS MONUMENT
The Courage monument was erected in memory of the victims of the earthquake (magnitude 8.3) of April 26, 1966. A granite cube engraved with a dial recalls the time of the tragedy. The sculpture, by artist Dmitry Ryabitchev, rests on a pedestal separated from the cube by a crack, which a bare-chested man tries to push aside with a wave of his hand, protecting his wife and child. Bas-reliefs arranged in a semicircle illustrate the reconstruction of the capital and the bravery of workers from all over the USSR. A symbol of heroism.
