the "Father's Gates", or western gates, were the city's main gates. They housed a bazaar and welcomed money-changers. Destroyed in 1920, they were restored by the Soviets in 1975, at the same time as the city walls. A visit to the old town usually begins at these (highly photogenic!) gates, with their adobe brick towers, sloping bases and monumental mass, set off by the turquoise ceramics of the Kalta minor, the "short minaret" just behind. Tickets are also available.
