The huge square, once the heart of Bukhara, looks quite empty. The residences of the Bukhari nobles, the three madrasas and the mosque that surrounded it were destroyed at the turn of the century. The only monument on the square was a statue of Lenin, which also disappeared in 1992. The square, which also housed a bustling bazaar, was the venue for public executions. Its only interest today is a metal tower from which to enjoy the view over the city, with the fortress guardhouse in the foreground.
