MARDAKYAN TOWER
The tower of Mardakyan was built between the th and th centuries to counter northern invasions. It is part of a whole defensive system, comprising 24 towers and fortresses spread over the peninsula, some of which are still standing. Large lights lit at the top of the towers allowed soldiers to announce the approach of enemies.
The tower of Mardakyan is 22 m high, divided into six floors. It was restored in Soviet times. The holes in the ground, in the tower protection enclosure, allowed to store food and water in the event of a seat. An underground also connected the tower to the sea: soldiers camouflaient boats under the sand and thus had a means of discreet escape. The entrance of an underground linking this tower to another fortress is still visible in the first part.
Unfortunately, the tower of the tower is too dangerous to be accessible. We have to be content with the view from the ramparts. The panorama spans the entire peninsula and allows you to admire the barons'summer houses of the first oil boom. On the right side of the stairs is a second fortress, connected to the first by the underground. Left is the ruins of a third round, now totally disused.
Next to the tower of Mardakyan, you can see a th century mosque and a beautiful, well preserved stone building. You can only visit it if the key holder is located in the vicinity!
