Mosque financed by Azeri oil baron Murtuza Mukhtarov following the discovery of oil in his garden
Completed in 1908 after seven years of work, the Amirgan Mosque (the town was formerly called Khila) was financed by the Azeri oil baron Murtuza Mukhtarov (1865-1920). This former sleigh driver had made a fortune following the discovery of oil in his garden and his invention of a new drilling technique. His property had been seized by the Soviets, and Mukhtarov eventually committed suicide in 1920. His grave is in the garden of the mosque. Take a look at the carved decorations on the stele: between the traditional vegetal and arabesque motifs are discreet derricks..
