LARGE MOSQUE

Only the large wooden dome recalls the eastern architecture of the building. The recent history of this mosque is symptomatic of the turbulent twentieth century Azerbaijan. In 1918, during the ethnic riots between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, more than 500 Azerbaijanis were burned in this prayer place. During the Soviet period, the mosque was restored and was to be converted into a library: the collapse of the USSR did not allow the completion of this project, and the mosque was finally made to worship. But that doesn't stop its story. From 2010, President Ilham Aliyev decided to make him his past grandeur and to make it the largest mosque in the Caucasus. It is now done, and the work has not been half-baked.
