The fortress of the end of the Middle Ages is still visible behind the large park in the city centre. Remaniée (and, it must be recognized, largely disfigured) by the Russians, the fortress is famous for serving as a prison for the mutineers of the Potemkin battleship in 1905. A statue of Stepan Demeshko, one of the leaders of the mutiny, is in the middle of the park.
An old ruined church lies at the foot of the fortress walls, just behind a tree over 800 years old, which makes the city proud.
