FALLAIRES - VEILLÉE DE LA SAINT-JEAN

Here, as in many parts of the world, on St. John's Day large bonfires are lit to celebrate the summer solstice.
This day is the day of the revetla, a typical Catalan festival. As in many countries around the world, all useless objects are burnt. In Escaldes, for example, the revetla is preceded, between the 16th and 18th of June, by the preparation of the falles, coniferous trunks cut to create torches that are then made to spin in a dizzying fashion to give the illusion that they are large balls of fire. The Pyrenean fire festivals are classified by Unesco.
