FARGA ROSSELL, IRON INTERPRETATION CENTRE
Interpretation center on the outskirts of La Massana, offering family visits to discover the iron transformation process
Located at the exit of La Massana on the road to Ordino, the Farga Rossell Museum is easily spotted by its large glass elevator that takes visitors down to the river, where the old forge named Rossell is located. Built between 1842 and 1846, this superb stone house that operated until 1876 is a testimony to the mastery of iron production in the days when Andorra was a major iron-producing area. Today, the Rossell Forge has become an interpretation center that aims to explain the process of transformation of this ore, its transportation and its commercialization in the Catalan markets. An audiovisual presentation introducing the visitor to the world of iron, followed by a superb multimedia show with special effects, show the importance of the 4 elements necessary to obtain iron (water, earth, air, fire) and attest to the hard work of the blacksmiths of the 19th century. In the second room, a forge workshop is reconstituted for a demonstration of the shaping of hot iron into ingots thanks to the hammer and the hammer activated by the force of the river. As you leave the museum, you will notice the large wooden water wheel driven by water and the mechanisms that transform its rotary movement into vertical motion. This educational forge is undeniably inventive and well worth a visit. You can choose to follow a guided tour with or without a demonstration. A visit suitable for families.
