A pioneer and departure signal of the carnival of the Basel Carnival, Vogel Gryff has been a tradition of military service since 1838. Three allegorical figures pass in honour of the three Small Basel corporations: the Wild, the Griffon and the Lion. The parade begins in the morning on the Rhine, when the "Savage" of the corporation "zur Hären" (Hären is an old word that designates the oiseleurs fillet), runs a uprooted fir, descends down into a raft accompanied by two drums, two drapeaux, two gunners tirant up to the "Mittlere Brücke" bridge, to join the Griffon of the corporation "zum Greifen", and The Lion of the corporation "zum Leu". These three characters travel on the right bank of the Rhine with 4 "Ueli". They collect money for charities and home homes in Petit Basel. At each stop of the procession, the Lion, the Wild and the Griffon present their traditional dance. The party ends late in the night.
