FORMER BOTANICAL GARDEN (ALTER BOTANISCHER GARTEN)
The old botanical garden (not to be confused with the new botanical garden that moved to Zollikerstrasse in 1977) has a long history dating back to the 16th century when Conrad Gesner, a Swiss doctor and botanist, founded a medicinal plant garden (Gessner-Garten) there. A few years later, a botanical garden will complete the Gessner-Garten. In the 19th century, the Palm Tree Greenhouse was built, a glass and wrought iron greenhouse classified as a historical monument that is now used as a concert or exhibition hall. Home to old trees, it is now a quiet and very beautiful place that houses, in addition to the plant garden, the ethnological museum.
