ANCIEN ARSENAL (OLD ARSENAL)
Cannons in Geneva? Some of them are still used during the Escalade festival in December. A very beautiful mosaic tells the story of Geneva.
Originally, the site was an open-air market in Roman times. It was covered over in the 16th century and arcades were later added. The site became a granary before serving as a military depot from 1720 to 1877, as evidenced by the five cannons in storage. Nowadays, it keeps the state archives. On the back wall, three frescoes (by Alexandre Cingria) illustrate key periods in the city's history: the arrival of Julius Caesar, the fairs of the Middle Ages and the reception of Huguenot refugees during the Reformation.
