SITE ARCHÉOLOGIQUE DE LA CATHÉDRALE SAINT-PIERRE (ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE)
The genesis of Geneva in 3,000 of underground remains. Go into the bowels of the earth and visit the archaeological site.
A must-see in the old town, this site is unique. It allows you to explore Geneva's subsoil and learn a great deal about its history through various periods. Located beneath Saint-Pierre Cathedral, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Northern Alps. The tour begins with remains dating back to the 3rd century AD, and ends with the construction of the cathedral in the 13th century. Did you know that the first place of worship dates back to the 4th century? This tour will give you a better understanding of how Christianity took root in Geneva. The site evokes each historical period through the presentation of archaeological research. The visit is fascinating: we discover daily life in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, with an evocation of 6th-century Geneva. Interesting objects are on display, such as wheat-processing techniques, a reproduction of the clerks' cells, sumptuous mosaics, decorative stuccowork, the tomb of an Allobroge chieftain... and explanatory videos. Visitors can also admire the cathedral's crypt, dating from the year 1000 to the Carolingian era, and Celtic coins. The museography has been completely redesigned for an educational visit, with a presentation of the history of Saint-Pierre Cathedral through the centuries. Animated films show the evolution of the site over more than two thousand years of history. Scavenger hunt for children.
