HERMITAGE FOUNDATION
As much for the museum as for the park, the Hermitage doubly deserves its place in this top list. Twice as many reasons to go.
The setting is superb: a handsome pink mansion dating from 1851 houses the Fondation de l'Hermitage. The sloping park surrounding the house opens onto the lake. It's almost as if time has stood still on this estate, far removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Originally the property of banker Charles Juste Bugnion, the house welcomed the upper middle classes of Lausanne for social evenings. Two exhibitions are held here each year, devoted to the fine arts, with a particular focus on Western art of the 19th-20th centuries. The visit is very pleasant and the paintings are well displayed. In recent years, we have seen works by Monet, Magritte and Van Gogh. In addition, the Fondation de l'Hermitage collection now comprises over 600 works by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, as well as artists from the Vaud region. A selection of these works is regularly presented to the public during temporary exhibitions.
The Foundation's park : rare species of trees have flourished for decades in this magnificent park. This beauty is the work of Jeanne-Marie Bugnion, wife of the original owner.
The bookshop stocks fine art books, and the L'Esquisse restaurant, located opposite the museum, is very pleasant.
The L'Esquisse restaurant, housed in the orangery, offers weekend brunches in addition to its regular menu.
Activities: "Art and Brunch" Sundays, guided tours for adults and children..
