MARKET STAIRS
We just love urban comedy. Go up, down, up and even back down those steps! Just like the Belle Époque..
These handsome wooden staircases (177 steps) start from the Place de la Palud (below Rue Mercerie) and form a covered passageway linking the upper and lower towns. They date back to the 13th century, but were built in their present form between 1717 and 1719. They were designed so that two people could pass each other, loaded with baskets, on their way to the two markets: the one in La Palud and the one held in the small square halfway up the stairs. At the same time, a pretty cobbled street runs alongside the stairs.
