CARNIVAL OF BOLZES

Young and old gather to burn the dreaded "rababou". An event not to be missed for its tradition and energy.
Like many other Catholic towns, Fribourg attaches great importance to the Carnaval des Bolzes, as it is known here. Every year, the streets and cafés are filled with costumed musical groups (Guggenmusik). They also burn the "Rababou", a gigantic, hideous doll that symbolizes all the misfortunes of the previous year. It's a very popular event, and the whole town is alive with the frenzied rhythms of processions and musical cacophonies of all kinds. Children are king, but adults have just as much fun.
