The former Opéra d'Alger, designed by architects Chassériau and Ponsard in 1853 and rebuilt in 1883 after a fire damaged it, became the Théâtre national algérien Mahieddine Bachtarzi after independence. Recently beautifully restored and repainted, it regularly hosts world-renowned national and foreign troupes. It boasts a beautiful 750-seat auditorium where shows are produced, including the National Festival of Professional Theatre.
