WHITE LADY

Guided tour to discover a remarkable rock fresco, painted over two thousand years ago by a group of Bushmen.
The visit will last about two hours. It is necessary to go in the massif of Brandberg to follow the tracks of the "White Lady"... We advance with a guide damara, because we evolve then on a protected site. It is here that the famous White Lady was discovered in 1918 by the explorer Maack, who gave his name to the shelter. But what is the White Lady? It is nothing more than a rock fresco drawn on a rock of 5.5 m by 1.5 m, painted more than two thousand years ago by a group of Bushmen in the heart of the rock. If there are thousands of rock paintings in the region, this one has been the source of much debate on its interpretation. The character has the particularity of having straight and light hair, could he be non-African? Others see it as a ritual dance. Could it be the self-portrait of a Bushman shaman who painted this fresco? If we take into account the bow, the arrow and the animals all around the painting, wouldn't the drawing rather represent a simple hunting scene? By dint of haunting the German geologist explorer Reinhard Maack, the drawing was nicknamed "White Lady". If archaeologists agree to date the work to 16,000 years, the theories on its origin diverge. The most recent ones tend to show that the painting is indeed of Bushman origin and that the White Lady is a man. But isn't this the beauty and magic of rock paintings, not to understand everything, explain everything, detect everything and leave the past its secrets of history?
