Japan's transport network is managed by several private companies, including JR. This company is often well known to tourists, many of whom purchase JR passes (preferential-price passes for foreigners that give access to the train and shinkansen network operated by JR). In Tokyo, several JR lines can be used with a pass: the circular Yamanote line in central Tokyo, the Chuo connecting west to Shinjuku and Tokyo Station, the Keihin-Tohoku, the Sobu and the Saikyo. Passes can be purchased before departure or on the spot.
