Built in 1911, it is the first western-style theatre in Japan. Originally, the building was inspired by European opera houses, but it was destroyed and rebuilt in the 1960s. The pompous red lined interior heralds the colour: Broadway-style musicals with all kinds of effects and set changes. The comedies are as much Western shows as they are Japanese stories. The theatre can accommodate about 1,900 people. On the 9th floor, there is a small museum where you can see temporary art exhibitions.
