The No, Japan's oldest theatre, is honoured at the Takigi No festival, where the troupes play in the open air.
Noh is one of the oldest Japanese theatrical forms. Gestures and speech are extremely ritualized. It deals with historical or legendary themes and is still practiced nowadays. The Takigi Noh festival which takes place every year at the Heian Jingu in Kyoto is an excellent way to discover this art. The two schools of Noh perform the classic texts of the genre in the open air, sometimes at night by torchlight. Understanding Japanese is not a prerequisite, and explanations in English are available.
