For Setsubun, demons are hunted and last year's amulets are burned. The year is beginning auspiciously.
Setsubun is the last day before the arrival of spring, and traditionally marks the beginning of the new year. On this occasion, celebrations are held in the main temples of Tokyo and Kyoto, including the Yoshida Jinja in Kyoto. During Setsubun, in families as well as in shrines, people throw soybeans called "fortune seeds" while shouting: "Demons, outside. Fortune, inside", to chase away evil before the beginning of the year. Demon dances are also part of the program.
